Difficulty in swallowing, on a regular basis, should not be ignored! Occasionally, most people will have an issue with swallowing something while eating or drinking – and that is certainly not cause for alarm. Medical intervention is necessary if the problem persists. Call ADH and make an appointment with a trained gastroenterologist to access the problem.

The source of the problem should be discovered as soon as possible, so as to begin treatment early and to reduce the risk of further complications. For example, some patients with swallowing difficulties will aspirate (or inhale into their lungs) the food or liquids they are attempting to swallow. This can lead to infection and chronic scarring of the lungs.
